Biography

Pio Serafini was born in 1951 in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. He is a painter, architect, and musician in the truest sense—an artist who embodies a deep connection to his land, often choosing the Piceno region as the central subject of his work.

His artistic identity is also rooted in the local painting tradition of Ascoli, blending this heritage with clear influences from the finest post-Impressionist French painters, from Cézanne to Chagall. Serafini’s work continues along the artistic lineage of notable Ascoli painters like Dino Ferrari and Ernesto Ercolani, serving as a foundation for his highly original, introspective reimagining of visual elements.

His landscapes—characteristically silent and devoid of human presence—are not just depictions of place, but reflections of inner experience. Urban clusters, fields, mountains, and skies appear gently distorted, as if shaped by waves of memory, softening their contours and transforming reality into something more poetic.

Color in Serafini’s paintings plays a powerful expressive role. Often anti-naturalistic, his palette ranges from bright and vibrant to dark and brooding, condensing light within the volumes of his subjects. His depictions of the Marche countryside resemble tapestries made from the “fabrics” of various crops, while the city of Ascoli appears through its immobile towers—metaphysical relics frozen in time.

Animals from the still-living rural tradition also populate his work, especially the rooster—a recurring motif rendered in a style that borders on Futurism. With exploding lines and vivid colors, the rooster becomes a dynamic “trait d’union” between tradition, emotional intensity, and compositional movement.
