Pio SERAFINI was born in 1951 in Ascoli Piceno; he is a painter, architect, and musician. He embodies these roles in the deepest sense because, in addition to frequently choosing the Piceno territory as the favorite subject of his work, he is also the custodian of a typically Ascolan pictorial tradition. Alongside a clear influence from the best French Post-Impressionist painting, from Cézanne to Chagall, Serafini’s work follows in the footsteps of the illustrious Ascolan painters Dino Ferrari and Ernesto Ercolani—a starting point for a highly original internal deformation of the visual element. His exploration of environments, typically silent and devoid of human presence, is always an internal search that tilts urban clusters and fields, mountains and skies, as if the wave of memory and recollections crashed against reality itself, bending it and making its outlines and distinctive features evanescent. The color, which captures and draws the eye into the composition, is also expressive and often anti-naturalistic, with tones ranging from bright to dark, capable of condensing light within the volumes of the subjects represented: the Marche landscapes, with countrysides that become tapestries composed of the “fabrics” of different crops, but also the city of Ascoli, with its typical towers, motionless and solitary like metaphysical artifacts; and then the animals of the still-living peasant tradition, among which the rooster stands out—a recurring element of his production, treated in an almost Futurist manner, a convergence and explosion of dynamic lines and ringing colors, a true “trait d’union” between tradition, emotional intensity, and compositional dynamism.
