José Guevara, born in Puebla de Guzmán in 1928 and passed away in Huelva in 2010, was a prominent Spanish artist.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Huelva, beginning his career with figurative works created during the oppressive climate of Francoist Spain. Forced to emigrate to South America for political reasons, he encountered the avant-garde movements of the “Arte Nuova” and “Non-Figurative” groups. In 1953, he discovered the technique of pigment combustion, which would become central to his artistic language.

From 1958 onward, Guevara began exhibiting internationally, showcasing his works in France, the United States, Australia, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Panama, Iceland, Italy, and Japan. He took part in major events such as the XXVI Venice Biennale (1962), as well as the Biennials of Paris, São Paulo, and Alexandria, along with various intercontinental annual exhibitions.

By the late 1970s, Guevara settled in Italy, where he earned the nickname “Rosso Guevarino” due to the predominant use of red in his paintings. His work remains a symbol of expressive freedom and political resilience, recognized for its unique fusion of material experimentation and emotive power.
["GET
