Biography

Giovanni Greco was born in Catania, Italy, in 1953.

After interrupting his biology studies, he deepened his engagement with the arts and enrolled at the Scuola del Nudo in Catania. In 1980, he began his painting career, initially inspired by the surrealist imagery of René Magritte and later by Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical vision. Greco explored the tension and potential harmony between two seemingly opposing realms: dream and objective reality, aiming to merge them into a concept of “absolute reality.”

At the core of his artistic philosophy lies the idea of “éndonèxò”—a neologism he coined from the Greek words éndon (inside) and éxò (outside). This concept reflects a gaze turned simultaneously inward and outward: a self-reflective and introspective perspective, yet one that seeks to bring his art closer to the emotional experience of the viewer. His goal is to evoke profound sensations that rise from the depths of the soul and gradually displace the rational clarity of consciousness with dark, primal energies.

Greco’s work is driven by a strong existential impulse, seeking to confront the great dilemmas of human existence and the individual’s relationship with the world. His paintings attempt to “interpret thought”—offering what he describes as “visual blackmail” or “soul blackmail”, powerful images that compel emotional and philosophical engagement.

Over time, Greco became increasingly drawn to metaphysical painting, especially to De Chirico’s work, not for its stylistic elements, but for its compositional solidity and philosophical depth. His paintings often depict objects, figures, and spaces as massive, solemn presences, rendered in dark, textured chromatic volumes. These elements exist in timeless settings, suspended between metaphysical suggestion and neoclassical references drawn from the past—dislocated from historical time and placed in an unknown world, rich in silence, mystery, and introspection.
